Locking swirls and haze under a coating is a mistake. A ceramic coating bonds to your clear coat and preserves whatever is underneath it, good or bad. That's why paint correction, the machine-polishing step, decides how good a coated car looks. It's also why KlenCars builds correction into every ceramic coating package instead of treating it as an optional extra.
Here's what machine polishing actually removes, the difference between a 1-step and a 2-step correction, and when each is worth it.
What paint correction is
Paint correction is a machine-polishing process. It removes swirl marks, oxidation, haze, and light clear-coat defects. These defects aren't dirt. They're physical damage in the top layer of the clear coat. Under the sun they scatter light in every direction, and that's what makes paint look dull, cloudy, or spider-webbed.
Polishing levels the surface by refining a very thin layer of clear coat. Once the surface is level, light reflects cleanly again and the paint regains its depth and clarity.
What machine polishing removes, and what it doesn't
It typically addresses:
- Swirl marks from automatic brush washes and improper hand washing
- Haze and wash-induced marring
- Oxidation that makes paint look flat or chalky
- Light scratches that sit within the clear coat
What it can't promise:
- Deep scratches. If a scratch has gone through the clear coat (often you can catch a fingernail in it), polishing can make it less noticeable but can't fully remove it.
- Rock chips. Missing paint needs touch-up or paintwork, not polishing.
- A perfect result on every panel. We inspect under dedicated lighting first and tell you honestly what to expect before we start.
1-step vs. 2-step correction
The difference is how much defect removal happens before the coating goes on.
1-Step Correction (included in the 5-Year Ceramic Coating)
A single machine-polishing pass with a fine finishing polish. It:
- Reduces light swirl marks, haze, and wash-induced marring
- Enhances paint depth and clarity before the coating is applied
1-step is the right fit for newer vehicles and well-kept daily drivers. The paint is in decent shape and mostly needs refining, not heavy cutting.
2-Step Correction (included in the 10-Year Ceramic Coating)
A heavier compounding cut followed by a jewel finishing polish. It:
- Addresses deeper swirls, scratches, and oxidation
- Uses a Stage 1 compound cut and a Stage 2 finishing polish
- Delivers maximum clarity and gloss for long-term ceramic bonding
2-step makes sense when the paint has visible, deeper defects, or for an enthusiast or luxury vehicle you plan to keep for a long time and want looking its absolute best.
When each is worth it
A few simple questions help:
- Is the car new or nearly new, with light marring you only see in direct sun? 1-step is usually enough. That's the 5-Year Ceramic Coating, from $699.
- Does the paint have obvious swirls, a dull or oxidized look, or years of tunnel-wash damage? 2-step will make a much bigger visual difference. That's the 10-Year Ceramic Coating, from $899, which also adds ceramic on the wheel faces and exterior glass.
- Are you keeping the vehicle long-term? Deeper prep pays off, because the coating will preserve that finish for years.
If you're not sure, send us your vehicle details. We look at the paint's condition and recommend the right level before your appointment.
Why correction is built into every coating package
KlenCars doesn't sell paint correction as a standalone service. It's the preparation step inside our 5-Year and 10-Year ceramic coating packages, because the two belong together:
- A coating seals in what's underneath it. Coating over swirls makes those swirls permanent and glossy.
- A coating needs a clean, level bonding surface. Correction plus a panel wipe to remove polishing oils gives the ceramic bare clear coat to bond to.
- The gloss you see on day one is the gloss you keep. The coating then protects that corrected finish from UV, oxidation, and chemical staining.
If you're only looking to refresh the gloss without a coating, our add-ons list a 1-Step Polish and a 2-Step Polish that can be added to a detail, and our Scratch Removal add-on (from $30) targets isolated surface scratches where the clear coat allows.
How the full process works at your location
KlenCars is mobile. We bring our own water, power, and equipment to your home or workplace in Austin, Cedar Park, Leander, Liberty Hill, Georgetown, or West Lake Hills. Vehicle drop-off is also available. A coating appointment includes:
- Inspection under dedicated lighting to map defects
- Safe foam wash and full decontamination with iron fallout remover and a clay bar
- Machine polishing, 1-step or 2-step depending on your package
- A panel wipe to remove polishing oils
- Ceramic coating applied, leveled, and flashed to the manufacturer's spec
A full detail or ceramic coating can take most of a day. We'll confirm the expected time beforehand, and you don't have to stay with the car while we work.
Protecting the result
After correction and coating, the biggest threat is going back to old wash habits. Read our guide to keeping your paint looking new between details to avoid adding wash marring right back, and see what ceramic coating actually does for realistic expectations.
