Ceramic coating isn't magic armor. It's a sacrificial, hydrophobic layer that makes washing easier and protects your clear coat. If you drive in Austin, Cedar Park, Leander, Georgetown, Liberty Hill, or West Lake Hills, you've probably heard a lot of big promises about coatings. This post is our honest take on what to expect, written by the crew that applies them in our customers' driveways.
What a ceramic coating is
A ceramic coating is a liquid applied to your vehicle's painted panels. Once it's leveled and cured, it forms a thin, hard layer bonded to the clear coat. That layer is what takes the abuse of daily driving. Your factory clear coat sits underneath it.
The part people notice first is the water behavior. A coated surface is hydrophobic, so water beads up and rolls off instead of sitting flat. Grime, road film, and bird droppings have a harder time bonding to it. In practice, that means:
- Easier washes. Dirt releases with less scrubbing, so each wash is faster and involves less contact with the paint.
- Lasting gloss. The coating adds depth and keeps the paint looking freshly finished for years, not weeks.
- Protection from UV, oxidation, and chemical staining. These are what slowly dull unprotected paint under the Texas sun.
- Less maintenance than wax. One coating replaces years of spray wax that you'd otherwise reapply every few months.
What a ceramic coating doesn't do
Here's where honesty matters.
It doesn't fix the paint underneath it. A coating locks in whatever is underneath it. If your paint has swirl marks, haze, or wash marring when the coating goes on, those defects are now sealed under a glossy layer. That's why every KlenCars ceramic package includes paint correction (machine polishing) before we coat. Our paint correction guide explains why.
It doesn't make the car scratch-proof. A coating is a sacrificial layer. It takes wear so your clear coat doesn't, but it can still be marked by improper washing, automatic brush washes, or physical contact. Rock chips and deep scratches are outside what any coating can stop.
It doesn't mean you never wash the car. Coated cars still get dirty. They just clean up much more easily. Proper washing habits are what keep a coating performing for its full rated life.
It isn't permanent. Our 5-Year coating is rated for five years of protection and our 10-Year coating for ten, with proper maintenance. Real-world durability depends on your washing habits, whether the car is garaged, and whether you follow the cure period after application.
The 5-Year vs. the 10-Year coating
KlenCars offers two coating packages, and both include paint correction prep:
- 5-Year Ceramic Coating, from $699. Includes a 1-step paint correction (a single refining pass with a fine finishing polish), a 5-year ceramic applied to the clear coat, and the hydrophobic, easy-clean surface. It's a great fit for daily drivers and newer vehicles where you want long-term gloss and easier washes.
- 10-Year Ceramic Coating, from $899. Includes a 2-step correction (a compounding cut followed by a jewel finishing polish) for deeper swirls and oxidation, a 10-year professional ceramic coating, and ceramic on the wheel faces and exterior glass. It's built for enthusiast and luxury vehicles kept for the long haul.
Not sure which fits your car? That's what the quote is for. We'll look at your paint's condition and recommend one.
How we apply a coating at your location
KlenCars is a mobile service. We bring our own water, power, and equipment to your home or workplace, and vehicle drop-off is also an option. A coating appointment follows the same process every time:
- Inspection. We look at your paint under dedicated lighting to map its defects.
- Wash and decontamination. A safe foam wash, then iron fallout remover and a clay bar to get the surface truly clean.
- Machine polish. One-step or two-step correction, depending on your package, to refine swirls, haze, and wash marring.
- Panel wipe. We remove polishing oils so the coating bonds to bare clear coat.
- Coating and cure. The ceramic is applied, leveled, and flashed to the manufacturer's spec.
A ceramic coating can take most of a day. We'll confirm the expected time before your appointment. You don't have to stay with the car while we work. We only need you to confirm the scope and to hand the keys back.
Is a ceramic coating worth it for you?
A coating makes the most sense if you plan to keep the vehicle for several years, you'd rather wash than wax, and you want the paint to keep its depth in the Central Texas sun. If you only want a one-time refresh before selling a car, a Luxury Exterior with its 6-month ceramic sealant may be the better value.
Whichever you choose, the quality of the result comes down to prep. A coating applied over well-corrected paint looks dramatically better than one applied over swirls. That's why we never skip the polish.
